In 2002, Bravura Yachts, Inc.
was commissioned by the Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship
Association (NBSSA) to develop and produce an all-new match
racer for the prestigious Governor's Cup Match Racing Series.
The Governor's Cup is a classic
junior match racing series which has been designated the United
States Junior Match Racing Championship by US Sailing, the
governing body of the sport. It was founded by Balboa Yacht
Club members Chet and Glee Purcell in 1967 with a trophy donated
by then California Governor Ronald Reagan and is the oldest
and one of the most prestigious junior match racing events
in the world. Past competitors in the Cup include former Rolex
Yachtsman of the Year Paul Cayard, US Sailing team member
Morgan Larson, multiple Congressional Cup winners Argyle Campbell
and Dennis Durgan, and many America's Cup sailors.
Taking its name from the Governor's
Cup, the Alan Andrews designed GC-21 embodies all
the qualities of a high performance, tactical racer, including
built-in toughness to withstand years of high intensity racing
by the world's best junior sailors. In 2003 eleven boats were
sailed in the Governors Cup and won rave reviews from both
sponsors and participants alike. For 2004 the boats have also
been used several other prestigious events including Newport
Harbor Yacht Club's Prince of Wales area qualifier and U.S.
Women's Match Racing Invitational, once again winning raves
from sponsors and participants. With boats sailing on both
coasts and Canada, the GC-21 is proving to be popular as a
PHRF and one design racer.

BUILD DETAILS
Hull Construction
One piece solid laminate using vinylester and polyester resins
and biaxial woven e-glass. This single-skin laminate is built
extra tough to withstand years of hard usage as a one-design
and match racer. It has extra reinforcements in way of the keel,
rudder, bow and stern for added toughness.
Deck
One piece laminate using polyester resin and non-woven biaxial
e-glass. It is cored with Baltek end-grain balsa core. Deck
is bonded to the hull using ultra high strength methyl-methacrylate
adhesive and thru-bolted in strategic locations.
Interior
Single piece molded fiberglass structural grid takes keel and
mast loads. Four structural bulkheads and ring-frames ensure
a strong, stiff hull.
Keel
Cast iron fin, encapsulated in fiberglass/epoxy with integrally
cast lead bulb. Keel is thru-bolted to the hull with .75"
SS bolts and nuts. It is faired, painted and ready to race.
Rudder
Molded, foam filled, fiberglass blade over a type 316 SS rudderstock.
It is set in plastic bushings, faired and ready to race.
Rig
Tall, high performance aluminum mast and boom with SS wire rigging
from Ballenger Spar Systems. Sealoc turnbuckles and Forespar
aluminum spinnaker pole. All sheets, halyards and control lines
provided.
Hardware
All Harken blocks, tracks, cleats and line controls. 8:1 cascade
type backstay adjuster and boom vang.
