Sportster 29
Wins Class in 2004
Newport-Ensenada Race
After a slow start, this year's Newport-to-Ensenada
Race turned into a breezy beam reach to the finish.
Eric Kaltenbach's Bravura Sportster 29, Oooh La La!
managed to overcome the wall of dead air just past the
starting line to win the ULDB -D class. With designer/builder
Leif Beiley aboard as tactician and Steve Lane handling
the foredeck, Eric's beautifully prepared red boat also
corrected out over both ULDB-C and B classes. This was
a special race for Eric and crew, Arnold Christiansen
and Willi Hugelshofer because it was their first ocean
race ever.
Oooh La La! sailed just
outside the rhumbline, leaving the Coronado Islands
to port and jibed into Ensenada to finish at 11:26:14
on Saturday morning, over an hour ahead of the next
boat in class, a Hobie 33. "Once we put up a kite,
we were able to put the pedal to the metal, and sailed
away from our competition." said Beiley, who guided
another red boat, Craig Harmening's Aerodyne 38, Matador,
to an Ensenada race win in PHRF-B last year.
